SLA is a unique charter school that emphasizes scholarship, leadership, and service. At SLA, we strive to encourage our students to exemplify these characteristics in all that they do. Our students choose to come to SLA from surrounding towns due to our small middle school environment. Although our students come from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, we take pride in the community atmosphere at SLA. Making sure our students feel that they are a part of our SLA family is always one of our top goals.
Contributing to our community is a core concept of my Civics curriculum.
My students volunteer in various community projects on behalf of SLA and are learning the importance of community involvement. To accomplish this, SLA offers various volunteer opportunities to our students throughout the school year. In addition, students volunteer on their own in their communities.
Incorporating technology has been a challenge since SLA is a small charter school. These Chromebooks will greatly enhance the technology component in my classroom.
My Project
The Chromebooks will be used for research purposes such as primary documents, historical events, structure of U.S. Government, and current events. In addition, students will use the Chromebooks for projects. For example, students will create presentations in PowerPoint and write essays in Word. A fun component I try to incorporate into my curriculum is review games. Students will compete by playing various Jeopardy style review games and Kahoot to enhance their understanding of the material.
Another important usage of the Chromebooks will be for vocabulary purposes allowing struggling students to practice online flashcards.
Having these Chromebooks available in my classroom will help my students apply Civics to the real world and their community.
