Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of The City. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" including cooking, gardening AND coding.
My Project
Every morning students come early to school and work in the school urban garden (located between buildings near the parking lot).
My at-risk students are interested in attracting hummingbirds to the garden.
Students will use the requested books to research information about hummingbirds. They will discuss and decide the best places to put up three feeders. They will develop a schedule to check on the feeders and add nectar food when needed. Students are also researching information about best plants/flowers to attract hummingbirds so they can plant these in the garden. Students had a little gnome last year that broke so they asked to add another gnome in the garden.
