Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth graders are just starting to explore the world of young adult fiction. Let's give them some great books to read!
My sixth graders live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood.
Some of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, some are gifted, and all of them love to learn. I teach history to all the sixth graders in our school, plus science and reading to my own homeroom. In our spare time, we create projects that impact our whole school. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids, who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.
My Project
My sixth graders are in-betweeners. They are the oldest grade in our grades 2-6 school, but not yet fully in middle school. Some of them have read long chapter books like the Harry Potter series, but most of them have read only shorter books. During our first week of school, we discussed what kinds of books they want to read this year. Overwhelmingly they asked for young adult fiction books like Twilight and the Ranger's Apprentice.
My students need young adult fiction books. As they build their stamina and ability to read longer books, I want my students to be inspired by what they are reading. They gave me a wish list, so let's make this happen! We are asking for a variety of fiction books, including the Cirque du Freak series, Percy Jackson, Vladimir Tod, and Shiver.
With your generous donation, my sixth graders will increase their reading stamina when they plunge into the worlds of these outstanding young adult novels.
