My students attend a small, rural school where providing funding for "out of the ordinary" school expenses is difficult. They are "this century" learners who are creative, imaginative, innovative thinkers ready to discover their genius through opportunities to use technology to their advantage. They love to express their creativity by having the freedom to choose applications and methods. As teachers, we know there are multiple ways to approach learning so we seek any and every way possible to reach our students.
My Project
My students have access to a Makerspace where they are free to explore using a variety of materials. Adding a circuitry center would give them the opportunity to learn about electric circuits. Using the copper tape, LED lights, and coin batteries, students could let their creativity flow by making paper circuits. The copper tape would also enable my students to incorporate the MakeyMakeys in a multitude of projects like creating board games that have interactive spaces programmed in Scratch. My students would be so excited to be involved in projects where they could even create their own boats, cars, planes, artbots, wiggle bots and other simple toys using the AA batteries, small motors and switches. Our Makerspace has a 3D printer where they will be able to design and print parts to incorporate in their project. Giving my students the opportunity to participate in the design process will teach them the importance of making a plan, building a prototype, testing the prototype, and redesigning the product.
