This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach approximately 500 K through 3rd grade students who love trying new things. They always come up to me to demonstrate their songs, rhythm chants, and percussive ostinatos. It is so exciting to see their eyes light up when my students learn about a new culture through its music, or are able to read rhythm notation on their own for the first time.
My students are energetic, ready to learn, and love music class!
In order to help foster my students' continued love of music, we need some new seating!
My Project
In Music class, I stress the importance of generating music and movement from the spine. Music is movement through the air and therefore, music generates from our bodies into the air for others to hear. Right now, my students sit on the floor in order to free up their legs, ankles, and feet for musical movement activities; however, their movements are still slightly impaired.
I want to provide my students with a way to elongate their spines and open up their hips.
By doing those two actions, my students will be able to better move musically when learning new songs, improvising tonal patterns, and listening to music. The wobble cushions will provide more comfortable seating for my students while simultaneously elongating their lower backs and opening up their hips.
