It has been an exciting year when the school systems' grade levels were realigned. We had been a primary school in the past (grades K-3) and now we are an elementary school (grades K-5). The school's current population is 70% socio-economically disadvantaged and is comprised of about 30% Hispanic, 30% African American, 36% Caucasian, and 4% more than one race or ethnicity. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood but there is a great sense of community among the teachers and students.
This music area rug is in the shape of a circle. My Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students do many activities in a circle and this rug would serve as a valuable tool for forming a circle either for sitting or standing. In addition, the older students can find the music symbols on the outside of the circle as I ask them questions after they have learned about those symbols. Thus, this rug would function as something like a music symbol "word wall." Additionally, this rug would provide a soft area for students to sit when playing instruments of which they do come to the floor to play instruments often but currently are sitting on a hard tile floor.
