Help me give my students a chance to learn how to run a business. We are looking for a locked storage cabinet for inventory and one with drawers that can store our transfers.
I teach in a small rural school in Kansas. We are one of the poorest districts in the state with around 75 to 80 percent of our students being from low SES families.
Many have traveled no further than a couple of counties around ours and for some just going to a town bigger than 10,000 people is like going to a big city.
When they find success or something they are passionate about, it is like the sun shines brighter and the clouds go away for at least a short while. One of my seniors has been working with me on the project I want to get started and has taken a leadership role. He is doing a great job and is not even aware of all the job skills he is developing.
My Project
We are starting a business to sell T-shirts, mugs, cups, water bottles, hats and other types of merchandise with our school mascots, information, etc.
The students are learning many soft skills that will be necessary as they move forward into the job market.
They are learning business skills like inventory, invoicing, profit and loss. They are tapping into their creativity to make designs for the merchandise. They will learn salesmanship and how to interact with the public. The students will learn problem solving as they manage the inventory, making decisions on when, what and how many of items needed to keep the inventory stocked. They are learning to use the equipment by reading directions and finding videos and then some are taking leadership roles and teaching others.
We appreciate any and all support no matter how small including encouragement as they develop skills that prepare them for life after high school.
