My students live and attend school in the South Bronx. All my students qualify for free meals. They are 17 to 21 years old.
I have twelve students diagnosed with intellectual disability.
Therefore, I teach high school special education but my students are at a first grade level. My school has a program named MYON that allows students to read digital books. But I only have one desktop in my class. Meaning that the access to the program is limited. They do not have access to technology at their home.
They require technology that can read things out loud to them to make the world accessible.
In our classroom, we have very limited resource. It is difficult to find books that are age appropriate when students read on a Pre-Kindergarten level to a second grade level.
Most of their learning happens through videos as they are not privileged with many opportunities to see beyond their community.
My students benefit from digital literacy programs because they help to consolidate their knowledge and improves speech impediments along with their communication skills.
My Project
We will use these ChromeBooks to use our imagination and go to different places through our reading with students who do not have access computers outside this school.
My students will be able to choose a digital book of their interest, which will help them to listen and choose a digital book, which will help them enjoy independent reading.
This project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
We intend to become digitally literate in an increasingly technological world by using the ChromeBooks to read. Please help my students access a world that increasingly tries to leave them behind.
