This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"YOU CAN DO IT!"
That is a phrase I tell my students each day. My students need 2 Chromebooks to access our supplemental online reading program and an iPad that will assist them in areas that they have difficulties in such as learning their letters, sounds, and blending those sounds into words.
Reading groups are my favorite time of the day, and there is a positive energy during this morning academic time.
My homeroom students have physical and health impairments, and I also teach students who benefit from small group instruction due to a myriad of needs. The types of physical and health impairments my students have are cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, heart defects, traumatic brain injuries, arthrogryposis (fixed joints), hemophilia, and many other physical and health disorders.
General Education students come into my classroom when they lack basic skills or they don't speak English as a first language or they need the benefit of small group instruction. Pacing is the same but the quantity of work is diminished because my students with physical impairments might require more time to complete a task. In turn, the anxiety level of the students seems lower which makes for a more peaceful environment that enhances learning for all.
My Project
My students need two Chromebooks to access our schools new online reading program during their reading block and to access other educational websites that will work together to raise their individual reading levels. They also need one iPad with a case that will support their learning with colorful apps to target very specific needs of each student that might possibly be keeping them from advancing in their reading ability. Students break up into leveled groups and move into different centers where targeted skills are reinforced at each center. Letter identification, letter sounds, blending sounds into words, and sight word identification are just a few skills that the students will learn and review with the new technology on the websites and apps. Most of the students at my school do not have the luxury of this engaging technology in their homes. They are so excited to use this technology to learn when given the opportunity.
The Chromebooks will be used for our school's new online reading program and incentives for my students to use educational websites when they finish with their class work.
The iPad's colorful, engaging apps will assist each student in reinforcing the individual skills that they need to strengthen to become a stronger readers with the goal of raising their personal reading levels, and, more importantly, strengthening their self-esteem.
