My students are a lively bunch of 8th grade students who live in suburban/rural Georgia. Even though some may have the comforts of home and family, many of the others are overlooked. Many of the students work hard in school however, keeping them motivated and engaged this year has been somewhat challenging. The entire Georgia Milestones State Assessment is online, therefore providing them with every opportunity to use the computers is vital in their success.
Currently my Language Arts class has been totally emerged in a classroom environment where our classwork and homework is online.
The students understand that this type of learning is not only preparing them for high school but for the world beyond. Our school provides them with the opportunity to use technology, but many times because we have to share laptops and this slows down their effort to complete their assignments in a timely manner. Even though, we have a Bring Your Own Technology Policy, many of our parents can not afford to provide these devices to their students.
My Project
These Chromebooks will allow my students daily exposure to classroom online assignments, preparing them for state testing as well as future work in high school and college. They will not have to share these resources with any other classroom, thereby providing them with the support they need. It will also take the stress of the students who's parents can't afford to purchase these items for them.
My students type papers, work collaboratively, create digital products and assignments to submit online daily.
Many of these projects and assignments provide my students with the opportunity to work with students globally when we participate in flipped classroom assignments. It is my belief that all students should have equal opportunities to experience all that a digital classroom can provide without sets backs such as not having enough technology in a classroom or being born into poverty were eating is much more important than a computer.
