Clever and resourceful, my fourth graders enjoy coming to school every day. In our diverse urban setting, children have a wide variety of abilities and different learning styles. This is a low-income/high poverty school district. Many of our students struggle outside of the classroom to find meals and a consistent living environment. In our computer lab, my students have demonstrated enthusiasm as they help each other learn features of the computer. To understand their own community in relation to the world they take initiative to explore Google Earth. With over 600 students in our school, my class is assigned only 30 minutes per week in the computer lab. As 21st century learners, they need more time during the week to practice digital skills.
My Project
“The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.” -Jean Piaget
Often my students are assigned technology-based projects and they need extra time to complete their work.
At home, many students have limited access to Chromebooks or computers. It is my goal to provide time and flexibility to allow students to finish projects. I want to ignite their passion to design slideshows, write eBooks, and collaborate with students in other classrooms. The long-term goal is a Chromebook for every student. Developing digital skills every day is paramount. My students rely on the opportunity to use a Chromebook in school to invent, discover, and create projects.
