Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our junior high students have suffered greatly due to extensive historic flooding in the town of Wharton that has not been seen since 1905. Approximately sixty percent (60%) of the town was under water for approximately ninety-six (96) hours. Within the district, the high school had multiple buildings, including the cafeteria, auditorium and all career and technical classrooms, flooded and inoperable for approximately half of the school year. Additionally, there was water damage sustained at the junior high due to wind driven rain. Our community has suffered greatly but our students have risen above all of the adversities due to the one constant in their lives, education.
Our district population is approximately eighty percent (80%) low socio-economic and the destruction brought by Hurricane Harvey has only amplified the struggle of this community.
Our academic achievements across the district have improved greatly throughout all challenges this school year. Our students have shown great perseverance in light of adversity and we as a district want to continue to provide a stable and challenging academic experience for all students.
My Project
Chromebooks are the perfect additions to all classrooms. With the addition of free apps and extensions, students can expand their learning by utilizing "real world" experiences and on-line simulations. With our district being a Google district, concept specific apps and district on-line curriculum and textbooks can be easily pushed out to students. These Chromebooks will allow our students to take virtual field trips, exploring concepts in a new way, and to see places otherwise deemed impossible for them to visit.
This is critical for our students who suffered wide-spread devastation not only within the school system; but within the community, due to the extensive flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey and the flooding of the Colorado River, which runs directly through Wharton.
Educational time is so precious, it is advantageous for a student to have a Chromebook instead of using valuable time checking out a device from a librarian.
All colleges use some form of cloud based storage and online classes. By exposing our students to Google Apps and the online environment, we are providing tools for our students to prepare them for the technology that students face in higher education.
By giving students Chromebooks, it is an amazing way to get students actively engaged while allowing students to take ownership in their own education, which will open new horizons for their future.
