Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At LSES, we proudly announce our new title of STEAM Academy! Here at our school we strive to give the children an abundance of opportunities available ranging from technology to STEM.
Our student population is highly dependent on free lunch and dual language, mostly English and Spanish.
A high percentage of students have Spanish speaking parents as their primary and only language spoken at home. This said, an extension of the learning process in the classroom during the day becomes a challenge. My students are curious little individuals with hope in their eyes. They yearn for the sense of an interactive and stimulating environment to be themselves.
A typical day in my first grade classroom begins in organized chaos, with breakfast in the classroom, LAUSD's move towards a healthy start of the day. Among the cheerful chatter as the students complete their first healthy choice of the day, and settle into their seats ready to learn, I am inspired to bring other healthy options into their daily lives! Now, it’s time to feed our hungry brains with technology!
My Project
Having a Chromebook and printer will allow for different structures of learning in my classroom. One way they will be used is as a STEM center. Students can utilize Raz Kids, DreamBox and other learning programs. Students can look up pictures and facts on science and STEM projects and design their own using Popsicle sticks, rubber bands, Pom-poms, feathers, jellybeans. Another way they will be used is by recording the results of an experiment by using Google docs and the camera. Recently, we investigated how air and weather were relevant to first grade Common Core standards. Students could take pictures of their results. They could collaborate on group findings by sharing through Google docs, and print results.
My project will make a difference because my students are of the technology based era.
My classroom is close but not yet at the level technologically to meet their needs as learners.
