Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school, a high performing, public charter school located on the southeast side of Chicago, approximately serves 415 scholars grades K-6. 89% of our scholars qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Throughout the day, I have 96 bright and driven fifth and sixth-grade students in five social studies classes!

As an educator, it is my goal to provide my scholars with a rich social studies curriculum that promotes critical thinking skills with the outcome of creating and forming 96 scholars into strong leaders and beacons within their communities.

It is imperative that my scholars have opportunities to cultivate their voices as active learners and engaged citizens. Learning about ancient civilizations and systems of government should extend beyond the pages of a textbook. Giving my scholars the opportunity to broaden their horizons by providing a learning environment that promotes creative and critical thinking while incorporating cross-curricular subject material means cultivating the next generation of civically-minded beacons.

My Project

Due to COVID-19, school has closed for a minimum of five weeks. While I sent my scholars home with as much as I could, I have 15 who do not have computers at home.

A Chromebook for each of my scholars will ensure they are continuing to learn while at home.

From Google Classroom, Youtube tutorials, and Zoom hangouts, my scholars will have the opportunity to continue the E-Learning initiative the rest of the country is implementing as we flatten the curve.

My fifth and sixth graders continue to meet and exceed my expectations when it comes to their learning. They have grown so much since August. With one-to-one Chromebooks, they will be able to continue to grow while at home during the school closure.
