I am a teacher in an inner-city school in Worcester, Massachusetts. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in the city where students speak a multitude of languages. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school they can be successful one day because they want to learn all they can so.
My Project
With the addition of Chromebooks into our classroom, we will be one of the only classrooms in the school that has access to such technology. My students will be able to access websites that reinforce skills and enable higher level learning. Chromebooks will not only become a tool that will help create more authentic learning experiences in the classroom but also build 21st-century skills that our children need in order to be successful in a quickly evolving technical world. My students will be able to work in centers with the Chromebooks, writing, reading, learning phonemic awareness skills, working with math manipulatives, and more. They will be able to create both independent and collaborative projects in order to show a true understanding of concepts.
Chromebooks are integral and the amazing tools that should be present in every classroom.
Without consistent access to technology, my students are not able to access 21st century skills. I believe that they should not be held back because of lack of funds, but deserve to explore and learn at the same level as students who have this access. Our classroom will be forever changed by the addition of Chromebooks.
