Help me give my students the gift of digital literacy and the ability to utilize technology to help them develop their voices as writers. These Chromebooks will give them daily access to what they need!
I have the best students in the world! We are located in the Bayview District of San Francisco; many of my students are of low socioeconomic status and often feel forgotten in a very gentrified city like San Francisco that sadly puts deficit labels on both them and their school. We have a unique student body in that about half of our students are in the General Education Pathway, whereas the other half are in the Newcomer Pathway, which serves recent immigrants to the United States from countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, China, Honduras, Vietnam, Mexico, Burma, and Cambodia.
It is a gift to teach my students, and a joy to see them every day.
They teach me as much I teach them. Every day, I come home with a new point of view, and a different perspective.
The computer resources at our school are very limited. The ones we do have are very old and we do not have enough to keep all our students in the 21st century in terms of using technology to help them develop as proficient writers. We are now living in an age where paper and pens are not enough to help our students be competitive as scholars. The technology computers provide, especially google docs, enables students to learn as they write because teachers are able to make comments directly onto their work. This resource will increase the amount my students are writing, which will help lesson the achievement deficit by providing them with the tools they need to be successful. Very few of my students have computers at home, so the computers they use at school are vital in terms of helping them acquire the digital skills they will need for college and beyond.
