My goal each year is to teach every student, no matter his or her background, race or gender, that each can & will succeed in mathematics and that it can open doors for the future. Promoting interest and fluency in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering &Mathematics) is the focus in my classroom.
My students are athletes, musicians, readers, hunters, gamers, skaters, artists - all capable of changing the world.
Despite limited resources, diverse student needs and increasing educational demands, our school continues to be a "School to Watch" and focus on meeting students' needs: academically, socially, and emotionally. My students have high goals they need to meet in today's 8th grade math classes. Not only do students in both grades need to prepare to demonstrate proficiency on the PCS PSSA Mathematics Test, but if enrolled in Algebra I they also need to demonstrate proficiency on the PA Algebra I Keystone Exam, which is a high school graduation requirement. In order for students to succeed in such an intense curriculum and gain interest in STEM, I typically engage the students through technology, cross-curricular projects and small group remediation.
My Project
I am requesting 2 Chromebooks and 2 Google Chrome OS Management Console licenses to strengthen learning through dynamic, diagnostic, and remedial computer programs and cross-curricular projects. These laptops and licenses will greatly enhance the learning experience for each student in my classroom. Some of the big plans I have for these laptops are to have students be able explore geometry concepts dynamically through programs like Geogebra, analyze real world scenarios using algebra through cross-curricular projects, diagnose learning gaps and aid in remediation in small group settings and hopefully in the future explore computer programming linking with algebra through numerical programming in MATLAB. Another program that we have started using that's creating excitement for math is First In Math. There are countless resources out their to help my students succeed, I just need to open the door with these Chromebooks!
These laptops will change my students' lives by making mathematics more accessible through technology and by providing opportunities regularly that are not currently available without these laptops.
The management systems will help me monitor the usage so I can ensure students are being safe and smart on the Internet as well as respecting the technology. Help me increase the confidence and spark a passion for STEM in each of my students with the significant help of these laptops!
