Our students are energetic, curious, and invested in their education. Many of them come from low-income backgrounds and lack resources that they need to succeed. Coming primarily from low-income/high poverty backgrounds, our students learn to develop resiliency and empathy when faced with challenges. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent some of them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical," but also means they have valuable strengths and perspectives that they bring to their analysis of the world.
Our school's mission is to provide students what they need to learn and grow and to create a loving and inclusive community for students that come from different backgrounds.
We have high expectations for our scholars and believe that they should have all the tools they need to accomplish their goals, take ownership of their work, and succeed. Our students are brilliant, quirky, and hungry for knowledge. They always seek help from our staff who are more than available after hours but struggle with support at home.
My Project
In the short-term, these Chromebooks will be checked out to students during the COVID-19 crisis to address inequitable tech access during emergency distance learning. In the long term, these will allow students to access digital math resources and improve their technology skills. Our classroom is a cooperative, hands-on learning environment. While we use a lot of physical materials, my students have had few opportunities to work with any digital math resources. With Chromebooks in the classroom, my students will be able to access graphing software, digital applets, and web-based resources to better differentiate learning. They will be able to test their mathematical thinking using tools that cannot be replicated with physical supplies and will gain valuable experience interacting with a variety of technology platforms. Our students are being held accountable via computer-based standardized assessments, and therefore deserve the opportunity to practice and become fluent with computers prior to the assessments.
