Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a rural district, with many low-lying farmlands and pastures. Some are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. They face challenges most teenagers face, and often times more. There are many in our school who struggle with reading, and that adds to their struggle.
They are great children, full of potential, and I am grateful to be their teacher.
I have academic students, students who excel in a trade, and students who do both. Our school is well-varied in the options it provides our students. My goal is not to push my students towards college, but to push them to their limits. I can't wait to see how high they soar!
My Project
My students currently share a set of 7 Chromebooks, which is a 1:3 (Chromebook to students) or 1:4 ratio, depending on the class. I would like to add 3 Chromebooks to the set so that it would be a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio per class. We use our Chromebooks almost daily, for virtual labs, research, quizzes through Quizizz and Kahoot, formative assessments, supplemental instruction through videos and virtual flashcards, etc.
As we use our Chromebooks every day, having a few additional will benefit my students tremendously.
Currently, they have to do their virtual labs, quizzes, and other online assignments in groups of 3 or 4. While it is still helpful, it doesn't give me the best picture of the individual students' capabilities. If they could partner up instead, that will help me narrow down their strengths and weaknesses and will also allow each individual student more hands-on time. Sometimes I have students who would rather work alone, or students that I need to assess on a specific objective and the additional Chromebooks will leave flexibility to do this. The surge protector will allow me to have all of the Chromebooks charged and ready to go at all times.
