Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our globalize world learning to navigate and research using computers is essential. My students have been dealing with failing technology all year, with log in times that take up 40% of the class period and random crashes that leave my students without any of their work. Any help would be nice.
My school is located in an urban setting in Colorado, at my school we have a wide variety of students from a large range of backgrounds from all over the world.
My students are hungry for learning and they want to connect with the world. We are part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and my students are always being pushed to go deeper and apply their learning in different ways. My school's population is 85% free and reduced lunch, and 76% Hispanic/Latino. My students are also 44.6% English Language Learners. Many of my students use technology at school and only school as they are not able to afford the technology at home. For my ELL students we are able to get them on the limited supply of computers that we have to allow them to use text to speech and Google translate. While my students certainly have their challenges they are constantly pushing to make themselves better. Any tools that can help them in this mission would be extremely well used and appreciated.
My Project
In my classroom we are working in stations. One of the four stations that my students go to on a weekly basis is the Discovery Techbook station where they are able to do research and complete Online assignments. The use of technology has impacted my students so much even though we do not have enough for the students to work efficiently. The computers that we have currently are so slow to log in that often times students are spending 20-30 minutes of class time simply trying to log in without doing any work. Chromebooks allow students to sign in quickly and save their work to Google Docs. so that they are not needing to log in and out, saving an enormous amount of time. These Chromebooks are also a technology that most of my students would not be able to use outside of the school building, providing them with necessary computer skill to succeed in this modern world we live in. In short this project would be a start in leveling the playing field for my students.
To summarize, by supporting this project you would be enabling 133 students to access the internet, explore lessons on Discovery Techbook, and explore and engage in online simulations.
This will enable them to be successful and help them gain the critical think skills that are essential in our society today. My students have high aspirations for where they are going and they make no excuses for where they are, please help my students put the world at their fingertips.
