My students are passionate and engaging individuals who strive to make a difference with the projects they take on in my class. They see real problems in our local community and want to find real ways to help those who are impacted.
Many of the students I serve in my classrooms come from low-income families and are unable to truly participate in our county's BYOD program.
True, most (though not all) have iPhones, but when it comes to really in-depth projects and building websites, smartphones just don't cut it. I would love to be able to close the technological divide even just a little by having available laptops present in our classroom for student use.
Many of my students do not have access to laptops of their own; many cannot afford them. Access to computers at our high school is limited, which impedes and limits many projects that could be done in our classroom.
Every semester, my sophomore's design and execute their own passion projects.
These projects require a great deal of research and for many of the products students create technology is essential, if not the house of the product itself. As part of the passion project, they contact experts, make connections in the community, and design and develop a website and blog.
If we had guaranteed regular access to laptops, my students could achieve even more. We are a BYOD school, but the truth is many of our students cannot afford their own devices.
