I have a lively group of students with a thirst for knowledge. They are 24 seven and eight-year-olds that love to explore. Whether it's through reading, writing, problem solving, or online research, they're ready to go.
Having a 2nd/3rd grade combination class has its benefits and challenges.
Most of the time, the class runs very smoothly, but sometimes I run into situations where I really need two of me. I can normally teach all subjects to both grade levels at the same time...except math. That's usually when I wish I could clone myself.
Unfortunately, there are never two of me and my students, whether they're in second or third grade, sometimes have to rely more heavily on peers than I'd like or they have to wait a bit longer than they're willing to. I like to think of these moments as opportunities to to practice patience and problem solving skills, but they don't always see it that way.
My Project
Because I teach two different grade levels, there are times, especially during math, that I have to separate the class. That doesn't mean that they don't still need help, though. They still need a teacher to help and guide them.
It's true that computers and technology cannot possibly replace teachers, but they sure do help.
When I'm working with another grade level, I would love for my students to be able to problem solve on their own. Using a Chromebook independently can help them figure out their immediate needs as well as create lifelong problem solving skills.
There's a world of knowledge outside of the classroom and I would love for my students to have access to it. Chromebooks are an inexpensive, user-friendly way to move past the four walls of our cozy classroom. The world is waiting for them if only they could access it.
