This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from the predominately African-American and Latinx neighborhoods of East Garfield Park and West Humboldt Park in the city of Chicago. Even though my students are from a high-poverty area, they still strive to be great, curious scholars.
My Project
My students are technologically curious; much of their curriculum is web-based, and they can navigate through the online lessons quite efficiently. They also appreciate the opportunity to complete and submit their lessons using Google Docs or Google Slides via Google Classroom.
The eagerness of my students to open a Chromebook and get busy navigating an online lesson is palpable.
When the reality sets in that they will need to wait until a later time to approach their lesson due to lack of Chromebooks, their spirits drop immediately.
My students also enjoy online education games that often teach them more than they realize! Many of the games they enjoy are academically rigorous, while others are socially and emotionally beneficial. When they feel successful while playing online education games, their excitement shows in their faces and even in their posture! It's clear they would rather be nowhere else than in school with their classmates and me.
