I am a special education teacher who shares a classroom with another special education teacher. Our class consists of students in all grades 9-12th, who have special needs. During the day, our classroom holds math and science Separate Day Classes (SDC) for Algebra 1, Geometry and Biology.
In the low-income neighborhood of Western Addition, our students mostly live in the neighborhood of low-income city housing or bus over from the Bayview District.
They all have some type of learning disability, which is why their individual education plans have them in a separate class with a smaller student-teacher ratio.
My Project
Since our students learn in such different ways, I want to utilize their individual strengths and create different work stations where they can learn at their own place. Often, during whole class instruction, students take different amounts of time to understand the new concepts. When teaching these difficult lessons, the Chromebooks will be used so pre-recorded lessons created by the teacher (flipped classroom) or guided notes/videos can be watched at the students' own pace. The Chromebooks can also be used to create different presentations and projects as SFUSD is moving towards having all students become technology-literate and utilize their student Google accounts (presentations, essay writing, excel documents, etc).
As their teacher, I have a vision for how I know they can learn best and having access to this new technology can make a world of a difference for these students.
My students, who are often frustrated and pushed out of the school setting, have what it takes to achieve the difficult subjects of math and science, and I hope the new technology will be a part of that.
