The students at our school come from all eight wards of Washington DC. They represent a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds. As a school, we value the diversity of our student body and we seek to encourage deep thinking about our subject areas through collaborative work.
Though they come from many different backgrounds, our students form a strong community of learners and problem-solvers.
They are eager to learn and able to work with peers who are unlike themselves, skills desperately needed in our world today. In our math classroom, we focus on problem-solving, working together, and perseverance.
My Project
Our classroom needs chromebooks in order to differentiate instruction for students at different mastery levels. Because we are a public charter school, with students coming from dozens of different elementary schools, we have a wide range of skill levels among our 6th grade students.
Chromebooks will not only allow students to sometimes move at their own pace (whether through skills practice or extension opportunities); they will also allow for small group work in which everyone has a (digital) voice.
This technology will make sixth grade math concepts more accessible to students who are still working to master skills from earlier grades, as well as allowing students who are ready for a challenge to press on into more complex concepts. Class-wide discussions and work in small groups will take on new energy with these tools for collaboration. While small groups of students work on the Chromebooks, other students will have an opportunity for more focused instruction from a teacher.
