Imagine being 5-years-old and having to wake up at 5:00 in the morning and having to be on the bus by 5:30. Now imagine having a 1.5 hour bus ride one way just to get to school? For my students this is not just a scenario that they only have to imagine. This is their reality each and every day.
I work at a title 1 school where 100% of the students are receiving free breakfast and free lunch; and where a majority of the school population lives on one of the four outlying Native American reservations, some upwards of 2 hours away from the school.
I teach in an ELL kindergarten classroom, where all of my students live in homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Most of my students are coming to kindergarten with an English vocabulary of less than 1000 words. This puts them starting out their schooling already far, far behind their peers as well as what they are expected to come to kindergarten with. However, my students are the most resilient, hardworking, and determined young learners and I truly believe that each and every one of them is destined for greatness.
My Project
Currently in our classroom I have 4 desktops that my students can use during center time. However, these desktops are extremely old and in need of a lot of work. Having chrome books in my classroom to replace these desktops would allow my students more of an opportunity to work without worry that something will go wrong mechanically as well as allow for more space in the classroom.
With chrome books, my students would be able to work in a space they are more comfortable in rather than being forced into a cramped space with multiple cords and wires surrounding them.
My students would also be able to use updated technology on the chrome book and could even use them for more project based learning.
My goal for these chrome books is to continue to offer current technology and engaged learning to my students without having to use the outdated desktops currently in our room.
