Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our morning routine is to start with a joke-of-the-day. Many students are turned off by science because they're intimidated by the content, and they have a difficult time relating it to their lives. My goal is to create an open and inviting environment where all students feel like they can be scientists.
My students are from the South Bronx.
Because of the issues my students face on an everyday basis, many of my students have interest fields that serve others. Because of this, I've created an Investigative Biology course which allows students to dive into the role of scientists and medical professionals. This allows students to use science to fuel their interest in social and biological issues that directly affect their lives.
My Project
Because of the nature of this course, internet research is essential for all students, and electronic word processing is required to accommodate the individual needs of some of my students. Unfortunately, our school's budget leaves very little room for to invest in technology and we are at a large deficit for computers.
Many of my students do not have cable, computers, and Internet access at home, so school is the only way that they can learn about the big issues that are happening in the world today.
The addition of just a few Chromebooks will help provide internet access for my students for research, as well as word processing support for students who require that accommodation to help them succeed.
