The bell has rung. There are thirty sixth grade students in my classroom at their desks, thoughtfully responding to their "do now" questions in writing. Five minutes later, the room erupts in lively sharing. This is a normal start to every class period in my humanities class: engagement, excitement, and curiosity.
Our 6th graders represent our student population; our school community is proud to have some of the most focused, bright, and courageous young people who work hard to show up (physically and mentally) to school everyday.
Our students arrive to school curious and eager to learn, despite the many challenges and social toxins that they face daily due to institutionalized inequities.
Last year, with the generous contributions of donors, our 6th graders were able to get 4 Chromebooks that supported our research unit around environmental and health issues we faced in our community. Although our students currently have access to Chromebooks, we have a limited amount shared across our entire school serving over 500 students. In today's technology-driven world, we need to support access for ALL students.
If this project gets fully funded and I receive these requested three HP Chromebooks, I will be nearly 25% on the way to meeting my goal of getting 1:1 technology access for our 6th graders.
These laptops will continue to support their growing skills in researching and typing.
In addition, there are tools included in this project that'll support students' ongoing social emotional learning. I'm asking for a liquid motion bubbler, wood tangram puzzles, and I Know What to Do cards.
I have implemented a "calm down corner" this school year, that students can use to check in with themselves to better communicate their needs to myself and others. It's been very successful in supporting our scholars, and I'd love to add more materials to better serve them.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
