Over ninety percent of my students are Hmong American, and many struggle with English language proficiency.
You can imagine the challenges that a composition course presents. Grammar rules that many Americans simply absorbed as small children must be kept at the front of their teenage minds as they attempt mastery of rhetoric. All this, and they're still eager to improve their academic writing.

My Project
My writers currently use old desktop computers that take forever to load and frequently malfunction. There aren't even enough of them to support every student in a given class period. Though they are patient with what they have to work with, these hard-working students deserve more. New Chromebooks and a charging cart will save students time and allow them to use applications that would otherwise malfunction on their current computers.
An investment in student writing is an investment in all content areas.
With Chromebooks, students will have sufficient access to well-functioning technology that would allow for greater flexibility and efficiency in their writing processes, whether they're composing historical arguments, literary analyses, or scientific research papers.
Students can bring Chromebooks with them to workshop their writing in small groups, follow along interactively with modeled writing during lessons, and take advantage of the myriad technologies that could help improve their English language proficiency.
