My 2nd graders are 20 fantastic and intelligent kids from the central FL area. They come from various cultural backgrounds and languages, creating a truly unique and diverse classroom. Each has different abilities and needs.
Many of my students struggle with reading, writing, or math, especially with meeting the Florida State Standards.
Our district is a Title I district with every student receiving free breakfast and lunch. Many students are being raised in single-parent households. These situations, unfortunately, have prevented them from getting ahead early in life and have not provided them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." However, from the moment they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. Since many lack access to technology in the home, I am motivated to provide these tools for them even more.
I am amazed at how much of a family these students are to each other and how they depend on each other daily. In my classroom we celebrate our achievements, help each other reach our personal and academic goals, and learn from our mistakes.
I am seeking funds to bring two Chromebooks into our classroom. With these basic learning tools, I will be able to bridge the gap between what the students need and what they lack in their homes. My students will be able to access websites such as Study Island, I-Ready, Prodigy, IXL, and many others. Chromebooks would help students who are kinesthetic and visual learners. It would open the doors of knowledge and individualize their unique learning experiences.
The Chromebooks will become indispensable tools that will help create more authentic learning experiences in the classroom, as well as build the 21st-century skills that our children need in order to be successful in our quickly evolving technological world.
My students would be able to work in centers with the Chromebooks, working on writing, reading, and so much more. A whole new world of learning will open up for them. As they create both independent and collaborative projects, I will be able to monitor their progress in understanding each new concept. They will have the tools they need to excel and feel confident in what they produce.
