Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I'm proud to say that I work at the school that I attended as a child. It is a high poverty, Title I school in New York. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom.

They struggle personally and academically and have diverse needs. My class consists of general education students and children who receive special education services. Students living in homeless shelters travel from other parts of the city to our school every day. Families that are new to the country (English new language learners) have the added burden of learning to communicate in English.

Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are filled with energy, are happy, and are motivated to learn. They are scientists, singers, mathematicians, leaders, comedians, readers, writers, teachers, dancers, me, and you; they are everything!

My goal is to make my students' school environment comfortable and their learning experiences, creative and challenging to prepare them for the future. I want my students to feel safe from the outside world, so they can focus on learning and simply being kids.

My Project

The current world crisis has brought to light what many teachers in low-income schools have known for quite a while, our education system is not equal. We learned that technology is a basic need. Schools were suddenly closed and children are expected to now learn online. Most of the children do not have technology in their homes and sadly, our schools had little or nothing to offer to help them out. Our schools are in dire need of technology so these children can have the chance to get the same online experience as their more well to do peers.

Without technology to use during this emergency, the educational gap will widen even more.

The Chromebooks included in this project will be given to 30 families. Most of our families have more than 1 child that attends public school so these Chromebooks will help many many more children.
