Chromebooks for Creative, Individualized Learning in Room 14
My students need Chromebooks to support personalized learning at their individual academic levels, and the webcams allow them to create video presentations to highlight and share their experiences.
It is such a joy to be starting another school year and getting to know all the personalities behind these bright eyes and eager smiles. I'm fortunate this year to have 22 students, as opposed to the usual 26-28. This also allows them and me to get to know each other on a more personal level quicker, too.
What makes my students so special is their ability to celebrate each others' differences.
I have students who can read 400 page chapter books and others who struggle through thin picture books, and my students find something to celebrate in each other. They are kind, cheer for each other, and are quick to compliment and help each other. They share creative ideas and are learning the life skill of appreciating another perspective. We are already building trusting relationships in Room 14.
While I also appreciate and celebrate the great academic diversity in my classroom, I understand my responsibility in meeting the needs of each student. This is the preface of my Donor's Choose project.
My Project
Students are naturally curious and want to learn, so let's provide them all the necessary tools to make this happen! Just as each child is special and unique, so are the academic strengths and challenges of each child. We now have the technology to create learning that challenges and inspires each child! I can teach and model life skills and character building, and now, thanks to Chromebooks, I can challenge 22 students at their individual levels while working on reading and math skills. The programs that adjust to student needs build their confidence as well as their academics.
Personalized learning is vital for academic growth and possible when students have access to Chrome books.
Fortunately I am at a school that has a chrome cart to share at each grade level. But, with four classes sharing a cart, there are many times when it is not available. There are many programs that support reading, comprehension, math fact practice, computation, as well as helping students find their passions and talents. Students learn how to insert photos, graphs, charts, and cite texts in their work, and all of these tasks are possible with access to Chromebooks. While I facilitate smaller reading groups, another group of students can be working independently at their own levels on Chromebooks. Student choice is important and with Chromebooks, students can decide which avenue to take to enhance their own learning.
