Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly from socioeconomically challenged families and theatre is a safe haven from the challenges they face in their neighborhoods and home life. My students are dedicated to the theatre department and for many, it is their second home. They spend numerous hours after school each week for play rehearsals, to build sets, make costumes and for performances and events. My students must be in good academic standing in order to participate in the theatre so they are expected to be successful in their classes. My students are the kind of students that teachers want to teach. They are the students that can change the dynamic of a class and they are natural leaders. Without these students, our theatre department couldn't exist.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey has created an unexpected crisis for my high school students. Many of my students lost their only source of technology along with all of their belongings and their homes. Our school is already struggling with limited availability of computers for our students to use due to considerable growth. Since my students have already started the school year under devastating circumstances, it is my hope to provide my students with the technology they need to be successful this school year. I would like to be able to check out the laptops to my students when they need them in order to complete research and assignments at home and on the weekends.
