Students range from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Our unique elementary population of English Learners speak over a dozen different languages within our small school community. Both our English Learners and students with special needs are at least one grade level behind in their speaking, reading or writing skills. Our learning center is a place for our diverse minds to come and receive individualized lessons that meet their specific English Language Arts goals on a daily basis. In addition to individualized lessons, students use our learning center to access technology to support their classroom assignments, complete research to expand their understanding of core material, and practice English skills at their own pace through the utilization of web-based curriculums.
My Project
Research has shown that technology access increases today’s students engagement and motivation. These two components play a major role in a student’s success in language acquisition and classroom academics. As a result, my project asks for two Chromebooks, which will open the doors to technology for our English Learners and students with special needs. Through the Chromebooks, students will have access to the Internet, which enables them to use web-based curriculums such as: Google Classroom, Lexia, BrainPOP, Raz-kids, iReady and Imagine Learning. These software programs provide individualized learning for our students to allow them to read at their own independent reading level rather than at grade level, access to Google Classroom to collaborate with classmates, use word processing for writing, practice English grammar, and provides a vehicle for researching unknown topics and vocabulary. Lastly, the technological experience provided by these Chromebooks introduces our English Learners and students with special needs to the skills needed to navigate today's technology and how to use 21st century skills efficiently to become a citizen of our global economy.
Help be the differentiator for these English Learners and students with special needs!
