Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a bright and diverse group of special needs students from the Bronx. Despite coming from low-income households and having a variety of special needs, my students come in every day excited to learn and grow! They love to read, research, and use computational thinking in the classroom to take charge of their own learning. In our small classroom their personalities shine bright, even through the most challenging activities, and I have never met a group of students more motivated to improve themselves. Their passion and dedication encourage me every day, and I want to provide them with everything I can to make sure they never lose sight of their goals.
My Project
Throughout this year I quickly learned the importance of having technology in the classroom, especially in one with such a variety of needs. The reading levels in my classroom range from Kindergarten to 6th grade, and math skills are similarly varied. In order to help my students reach their academic goals, I work hard to differentiate my lessons every day and target each child's needs in the way that works best for them. This, however, is extremely challenging without having technology readily available on a daily basis.
Though my students are motivated and dedicated, they struggle emotionally with being at a lower level than their peers, and this can effect their growth and progress.
Having these Chromebooks in my classroom will allow my students to read similar texts at their own level, without having to worry that a classmate has taken note of their reading level. In addition, these Chromebooks will be used during small group instruction so that each student can work on practicing the skills that they personally struggle with. In math they will be able to work on those skills using interactive online programs. During writing lessons, students who struggle with fine motor skills will be able to type and/or dictate their ideas so that they can display their knowledge in other ways. Finally, having these Chromebooks will provide my students with much needed confidence and autonomy over their own education by allowing them to perform research projects and manage how they display what they know.
With your help I will be able to boost my student's confidence, increase their personal growth, and help them to achieve their goals. Any contribution, big or small, will make a big difference in these students' lives and will be so very appreciated!
