This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my students have never used a physical keyboard to type. They've only used a keyboard that's roughly two inches wide to complete their assignments. Hopefully, they could use computers that can truly help them feel more equal with other schools and systems.
Our students are some of the most disadvantaged students in the state.
Many of them enrolled in school without any English, almost all of them eat both breakfast and lunch at school because they do not have a consistent source of food at home. There are frequent instances of crime near many of their homes.
However, when they come to school, they manage to put all of that aside. They manage to learn and engage with new information with such great enthusiasm, that it would be nearly impossible to tell what they go through outside of school. They have a genuine passion for learning, and despite the many differences of culture, race, and religion, they not only respect one another, but they openly support and build strong bonds of friendship and community with one another that are not often seen at other schools that experience more separation.
My Project
My students will use these Chromebooks to research a variety of topics related to the history and literature that they are reading in class. They will truly word process for their essays, using full-sized keyboards, which they'll need to use later in life. They'll collaborate with one another using a variety of programs and applications on the Chromebook.
This project will undoubtedly improve my students' lives by giving them consistent access to technology, which is relatively scarce in our school.
They will be able to learn the proper methods of typing and formatting essays, combined with research methods to strengthen their own understanding of the curriculum we cover. Instead of having to find a McDonald's and use its wifi to complete online assignments on an iPod, they can use these Chromebooks. This will better prepare them for their future.
