Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to discover new things about the world we all live in! With access to the Internet they will have the ability to explore more of the world around them. The biggest issue for my students in exploring their world is the lack of access to the internet.
Over 90% of the students in my school are on free and reduced lunch.
This fact reflects the availability of resources like computers and Internet access in their homes. Many students look forward to coming to school to get a chance to use a computer but, with classroom sizes in the building growing rapidly, they do not consistently get the opportunity. Resources in the school are becoming less and less available with many students only having access to computers when taking standardized tests. My school district is turning more and more to the resources of individual parents instead of relying on the resources of the community as a whole. Some schools in my district have begun rely on parents to purchase Chromebooks for their students. This is simply not a reality in the high-poverty school where I teach.
My Project
As a teacher, having technology in the classroom would allow me to meet the needs of all students in the classroom in ways that would enhance the educational experience of all students. It would allow me to challenge students to a high standard of thinking critically and applying their learning independently. Our school computer lab is constantly used for standardized testing, and the Netbooks we have are 5 years old, and many do not work. By adding these 3 Chromebooks, my students will have many more opportunities to explore the 21st century world. Having these Chromebooks would allow my students the opportunity to complete research, access digital resources, create projects, interact with students in other parts of the world, complete interactive simulations, and it will greatly increase their digital literacy.
By supporting this project and my students, you would be giving 70 students access to the Internet so they can explore new concepts and ideas, engage in online simulations, and much more.
This will enable them to be successful 21st century citizens and help them gain the critical thinking skills that are essential in our society today. My students are highly ambitions and make the best of what they have to work with, but I as their teacher would love to give them MORE to work with!
