My kindergarten children every year are very energetic and enthusiastic about learning. They love school and they come wanting to learn. I have been teaching kindergarten for 22 years. My class this year consists of 20 students; 75% of which are minority. Most come from a low income single parent household. Although I teach at a magnet school, most of the students in my class don't have the necessities to do classwork at home; such as pencils, paper, crayons, glue, and scissors. This alone puts them a huge disadvantage compared to the children who do have these supplies available to them. Most do not have access to a computer which is needed for distant learning. In my district, the minority enrollment is 82% of the student body (majority Hispanic) , which is more than the Connecticut public school average of 45%.
All public school children receive free breakfast and lunch.
The Waterbury School district has 29 schools ranging from pre-K to high school. There are approximately 110,000 school children in the the city, mostly from low income homes.
My Project
Due to the Corona virus and the major impact that it has and will continue have on the learning of my students I am asking for Chromebooks for the students that do not have access to online learning. My district is implementing various programs that the students will need to do online in order for them to continue their learning for the remainder of the school year.
All my students will have the opportunity to do their distance learning and not be at a disadvantage against those students that do have computer access.
These Chromebooks will be greatly appreciated by me, my students, and their parents so that they can continue to learn and have the skills needed for them to be ready for the next school year. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated!!
