These first and second graders LOVE science. They can’t get enough of the turtles in our classroom and the tomatoes in our garden. They love to build things, especially robots, out of any materials they can find. Performance and storytelling is another activity they enjoy. Having the stage to talk about something in their life or a subject they care about is extremely motivating and exciting for them. They recently did a unit on comic strip writing. They loved putting their ideas into action!
First and Second graders are natural story tellers. During these grades they learn to transfer their thoughts to paper through writing. It is an exciting time and critical to their success in third grade when state testing begins. Right now we have 7 working tablets that the students learn technological, reading and math skills through, but do not teach typing.
Having two Chromebook computers in the classroom would allow my students to record and upload videos to student-friendly websites (like ClassDojo), learn essential typing skills, and begin digitally publishing their writing.
It would also allow them to access quality educational websites as they learn to research.
