I have the privilege of working with 101 motivated, bright students. My students have diverse cultural backgrounds, and many speak at least one other language fluently. Eighty of the students have elected to take Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science, and the other twenty-five are in general Environmental Science. Many plan on attending college after graduation, and are trying to determine what they are passionate about.
Environmental science is one of the most important courses for students to take, as it relates directly to their choices and their impact on the Earth.
Many of my students had no idea what environmental science was when they signed up, and the first few weeks have been truly eye-opening for both them and myself.
My students are active in school and their communities, and many have part-time jobs, or additional responsibilities at home. They are highly motivated and have the drive to succeed.
My Project
Technology is an integral part of learning, and I am fortunate that there are laptop carts available in school to borrow. However, it is not possible to have a cart every day, and my students often ask me if I have a computer they can use. Additionally, projects are an integral part of my class, and students often work at varying paces. If students finish work ahead of other students, they can use the Chromebooks to complete the night's homework, or practice AP questions through Albert (a test prep website).
The addition of three Chromebooks to our classroom will enable students to extend their learning, both during and after school.
Several of my students do not have access to technology at home, and I plan to set up a lending system, where they can check out a Chromebook overnight. Through this, I hope to make learning more equitable for my students.
