My fifth-grade class has thirty-three students from diverse backgrounds. We have come together as a team of eager learners who work together and care a lot for each other. Our class mantra is “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well!” We display perseverance each day as we traverse through the curriculum. I use humor to help students succeed and to ensure that they’re excited about learning, enjoy coming to school and to put forth even more effort.
Each day I encourage my students to reach even higher goals of learning.
They are questioning more, trusting their ideas and researching to back up their thoughts. We’ve all become more engaged, involved, and hands on. We love taking charge of our learning and producing quality work!
Technology is integrated daily into our curriculum and the students enjoy pushing themselves and their technology experience. Through Google Drive and Google Classroom, we’ve moved into the world of research, collaboration, and project-based learning. We’re working on a goal of one-to-one Chromebooks in our classroom. Currently I have thrity-two Chrombooks and thirty-three students. We would love to have two more chromebooks to complete our one to one goal as well as give us an extra chromebook.
My Project
80% of student work in my classroom is done through Google Apps online. We use Google Apps such as drive, docs, and classroom every day. With the Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study in both our reading and writing program, we use Google drive daily during our writing lessons. In math, we have started to explore the flipped classroom method and students work at their own pace through teacher instruction and online programs such as Zearn and Dreambox. I believe it is also important to teach my students various computer-based skills, such as learning how to type, digital citizenship, and learning how to code.
In our district, we currently do not have the funds for one-to-one devices and funding these Chromebooks will allow my students to get closer to our one-to-one goal.
We are so close to our goal! With these Chromebooks, students benefit in all academic areas. Not only do the students formulate questions and research their answers, they also find evidence to back up their thoughts, strengthening their comprehension and critical thinking skills. Other curricular areas such as: science, social studies, language arts, math and even physical education benefit from the Chromebooks. The students’ understanding of physical education deepens as they watch videos, create graphs and answer questions posted online, by our P.E. teacher. Students are also able to watch videos that help reinforce the science concepts taught in class as well as in the Science Lab. The also answer essential questions in science, deepening their understanding. In social studies, students work collaboratively to research and complete projects to enhance the curriculum.
One-to-one Chromebooks allow students the opportunity to use technology across the curriculum, at any moment in the day. Our fifth-grade goal is to make technology as accessible to our students, as a pencil.
