Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students do not have regular access to working computers at home. They have chosen to attend our rigorous school and to focus on academic achievement, but today's world requires technological literacy, too. My ninth graders need a chance to develop these important computer skills.
My students are from working class families, and they dream of being among the first in their families to attend and graduate from college.
These young teenagers are developing as critical thinkers and relish the opportunity to express themselves through writing. My classes are diverse in every way - they are made up of individuals who are finding themselves and their interests as they learn and grow together. Our school challenges students to grow academically and personally, and we recognize students as they demonstrate the virtues of humanity, justice, knowledge, and wisdom. These students see the world and the challenges it brings and seek out solutions for our community and the world.
My Project
With eight additional Chromebooks, my classes will be able to make use of a full class set of computers. They will type and edit their own and their classmates' writing. They will engage in online groups, receiving differentiated lessons and learning certain skills at their own pace. They will receive instant feedback and complete research online as we write argumentative and expository essays. Perhaps most importantly, these computers will enable my students to become familiar with the technology that they will certainly need to have mastered by the time they reach college and the workplace. These computers will greatly benefit our classroom in so many ways.
With just eight more computers, my classroom set will enable blended learning that will greatly impact my students this year and in years to come.
The possibilities for differentiation, for pursuing topics of interest while preparing for the Common Core Standards, and for developing life skills, will truly change my students' lives. Any donation is greatly appreciated!
