Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is located in a very small, rural, farming community. We have a very high free and reduced-price lunch rate population, alongside a high migrant student population, and English Language Learners. This creates many inequities in the learning process. Students need extra support in most courses due to the many factors.
Our goal, as educators in this unique community, is to try and bridge the gap, caused by socioeconomic status, migrant living, and being English language learners.
Students who live a migrant life style will often have numerous gaps in their learning due to changes in schools, standards, and expectations from place to place. Many of our students also spend time traveling from family to family and have extended periods of time spent outside of the U.S., where there is no public education. Our school is in major need of support for these students with special needs.
My Project
My students need more Chromebooks in the classroom. I currently have 7 Chromebooks in my classroom, but that is not nearly enough for my largest class of 30 students. They need access to them for online interactive science labs, research, writing (which is a skill they need support due to our high English Language Learner population), technology integration, and Google-Classroom.
The majority of my students come from low-income households with limited technology, and I want to empower their learning for the future by building the technology available to them.
With access to new technology, we allow these students to know they wont be left behind in the STEM fields, and that they will have equal access to learning resources just like larger, more affluent school districts.
