Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th grade English classroom is a place of challenge and exploration. These students spend 8th grade learning about themselves as learners and individuals as well as the world around them, while engaging with a rigorous Language Arts curriculum.
My students are 8th graders in an urban Connecticut middle school, with 1,000+ students who come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.
Many of these students are new residents of our city, while others are new to the country in addition our school. As a result, these students have difficulties learning and becoming proficient in the English language. All of my students are ready to change the world but need our help in understanding how they, in particular, can best do so. Even students who come to 8th grade speaking and reading English need our help understanding this!
My Project
This project will promote student engagement by helping them to delve more deeply into their assignments using technology. Students need games and activities to help them connect with their work more than 'just another worksheet.' When they are able to take ownership of their learning and take part in the experience themselves using technology students are more actively engaged. Grammar and writing games can improve student language skills through repetition that doesn't seem "boring" (their word, not mine!). Additionally, curious students need access to research materials to investigate their research questions.
Providing access to technology has the potential to change these students' lives.
Students in my classes will use this Chromebook to learn how to conduct effective Internet searches, evaluate websites for credibility and relevance, and locate bibliographical information as well as format Google Documents, type academic essays following MLA format, and create Works Cited pages. Using Chromebooks to do so is crucial in a world where computer-related careers are shown to provide above-average salaries and opportunities for job growth. With your donations, my students will be able to more consistently use technology to conduct their learning about research and writing.
