Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, my students are excited to begin their educational journey in our classroom! Our theme this year is a classroom safari adventure, where students will discover and practice their new skills, as well as find out who they are as learners. These kids live in an area of high-need, and for many of them, school is the only bright spot of their day.
With a $50 budget for school supplies, it is easy to imagine that these kids could use some support to make their school day an experience that will stick with them.
My hope is that we will be able to provide these kids with the materials they need in order to have an authentic and fulfilling school day and allow them to grow as both students and as members of their community.
My Project
Although our district curriculum requires technology to gain access to learning resources for math and reading, we are in dire need of technology in the classroom. As of now, our math curriculum requires half of the class to use online resources while the other half works with teachers. The issue is that our students do not have enough devices to access these, and other, online resources. As of now, we have 7 iPads and 2 desktops, but we have at least 18-20 students each school year. The goal of this project is to raise funds for 1 Chromebook to add to our classroom.
The kids are missing out on a full technological experience and access to educational resources that allow them to gain the necessary knowledge of working online and using technology.
There are so many digital and online resources available that is restricted due to the lack of funding for tech in the classrooms. An important skill that is emphasized in our classroom is the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others. While this is an important skill to improve interpersonal skills, applying this skill set to a digital format is necessary to prepare these 2nd graders for their future.
In our classroom, we also use technology to connect student work and classroom activities with parents, which is a valuable asset to creating a partnership between student, teacher, and parent. We also use Google Classroom and other programs that are more easily accessed from a Chromebook. The Chromebook will allow for greater access to this parent-to-school connection.
