My students had a taste of technology in the classroom with the handful of Chromebooks available in our classroom. However, with 34 students in our class, eight Chromebooks doesn't quite cut it. My students' desire to use technology far outweighs our current ability.
I teach 34 energetic and eager fifth grade students.
Our school serves the neighborhood in which it is located. They love to connect to the world outside of our suburban area through technology. We are a Google Education district, but our limited access to computers has limited what students are able to do with all that is available through Google.
Having the technology in our classroom would allow us to use Google Classroom and the many other Google Apps to support and enhance learning. It would also allow all students to better have needs met through the ability to support and diversify learning through technology. In addition to the 34 students in our homeroom class, I teach 34 students from other fifth grade classes in our grouped math class. These students would additionally benefit from this technology, allowing us to flip our classroom during school hours and expand ways students can learn mathematical concepts.
My Project
My students are excited to use technology to share their writing with one another through Google Docs, to have their diverse learning needs met through web-based programs, interact with other classes through video stream and Twitter, and access information and content on the web and our Google Classroom. They would love to extend the opportunities that technology allows them.
WIth these five additional Chromebooks, students would be able to take their spelling tests online, write and share their writing with classmates for peer editing, share book reviews and chat with students in other reading groups or classes about books they are reading, and take class surveys and quick learning checks. Students will be able to track and turn in assignments online. Chromebooks can also be used with QR code technology to self check work and be instantly taken to learning websites and videos to extend and strengthen learning. We would also love to branch into computer science education.
My students yearn for learning and love the way technology is able to help me bridge the gap between what I can provide and their needs.
Many of the students ask to stay in from recess so they can have their computer time. With only a handful of Chromebooks and 34 students, you can see how their access is highly limited. Five more Chromebook will help my students to do so much more within our classroom and allow me to bridge learning for many students.
