Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." This is a Chinese proverb that explains how my students learn. They need to create something from the standards they are learning in my classroom in order to fully understand new concepts.

Students in my class and school are from diverse backgrounds.

They are mainly from families that are from low socioeconomic backgrounds, Hispanic, have family members serving in the military, come from Spanish-speaking families, come from families of divorce, have special learning needs, and need more enrichment to acquire academic learning. The students in my class are also deaf or hard of hearing and may also have other learning disabilities including visual impairments and autism. Students in our area battle low state test scores and need enrichment to better acquire needed skills and concepts. Most students do not have access to interactive technology at home. Most students only have access to the Internet or other technologies at school. When given the opportunity to use technology, students react with eagerness and excitement. They spend more time engaged in learning and better remember what is being taught.

My Project

With 5 Chromebooks, students will be able to address Common Core Standards by collaborating and creating projects. The Chromebook is a fantastic laptop for my students because it allows them to use the Google Drive documents as well as internet resources to create different projects. For Science, students will be able to run experiments and record the data directly onto a Google spreadsheet. They will also be able to attach pictures and graphs to the Google spreadsheet to show the results they have achieved. Students can collaborate on Google documents in real time and share the document with each other and with the teacher. Students can use Google documents to present their findings to the class. Students will also be able to use the webcam on the Chromebook to Skype with scientists, authors, and other classrooms to gain or share information to make the learning experience really authentic. You can see how using this technology makes learning more authentic to the students.

My deaf and hard of hearing students have language delays based on their hearing loss.

They are working twice as hard to learn the concepts that others more easily acquire because of life experiences. My students learn best with learning that is hands-on and interactive. Having the five Chromebooks will give the students motivation for the collaboration and creation of projects they need to make learning an authentic experience.
