Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredible! I have 28 motivated English language learners eager to learn.
My students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited resources available.
We are a Title I, Performance Improvement school with a 100% free lunch program. Many parents work two jobs and are struggling to support the family. Though their environment may not be conducive to learning, they have an insatiable love of learning!
Seeing women in STEAM-related careers will spark and inspire our youth to pursue a career in STEAM. We need to close the STEAM gender gap and get rid of the subtle and overt cultural messages about male superiority in these fields. The IF/THEN collection is an excellent resource for students to spark their creative minds.
During this unprecedented time, we continue to learn remotely as we begin our new year. The kids are resilient but I need to motivate them and make sure my lessons are engaging while integrating student collaboration.
My Project
The IF/THEN collection has motivated the students to be creative in the field of art as well as science. We would like to begin by customizing and designing face masks that will be available for students who don't have one. We looked at the discipline of Creative Arts and were inspired by Beata Edyta Mierzwa, a microbiologist who combines science with art and fashion.
We know that COVID 19 is a virus that is highly contagious and we've researched the impact of not wearing a mask.
We will incorporate chromatography to create beautiful masks. Hopefully, this will inspire some of the students to pursue a career in the sciences as well as design. The fabric markers will be used to draw symmetrical designs, viruses, and cells just like Beata. Through chromatography, they will learn about how lighter and darker dyes get absorbed at different rates. The results... a tie-dyed effect. Each mask is unique and will be available for students at our school.
We also would like to make child safe hand sanitizers for our school. It will be safe for kids to make because they will be using essential oils, witch hazel, aloe vera gel, and coconut oil. This gives the students the opportunity to measure, develop, and feel like a chemist! Labels will be designed by students. They will learn how hand sanitizers kill germs by denaturing the protective outer proteins of microbes and dissolving their membranes. In elementary terms, the germs went "bye bye". They will be inspired by Roselyn Rosario-Meléndez, a Loreal Associate Principal Chemist who inspires girls to pursue a career in chemistry by discussing various polymers and how makeup is made. The IF/THEN collection can inspire any student, especially females, to follow a career in the STEAM field as we say, "She Can Stem"!
