My students are imaginative and fun-loving kids. They are hard-working students who are held to high expectations. They want to succeed and try their best every day. They come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community. Many are ESL learners from multiple countries.
Many of my students face numerous challenges in their lives including hunger, safety, and unstable living situations.
Despite the hardships they are facing at home, they show up at school excited and ready to learn!
My Project
Recently I was asked to transform by first grade and kindergarten music class into a musical movement PE class to be held outdoors. Until now we have been moving and dancing! But I miss the percussion element of my music class. That's why I want pool noodles to use as drum sticks for some outdoor drumming. As each noodle can be cut in half, I will need two boxes. This will give me two sets of 40 "Noodle Sticks!" I've also included a hamper for easy storage!
Drumming is so important for all children to experience!
It helps a child work on skills such as turn-taking and sharing, as well as help them feel they are part of a group contributing to a group process. This may almost seem self-evident, but different playing techniques can be used to help work on different fine and gross motor skills. By participating in a drumming experience, children can be working on attention, impulse control, and decision-making skills. And, if that's not enough, it increases fitness and teaches rhythm! Please help me get my kids some noodles, for OODLES of fun drumming!
