Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember that feeling when your teacher would say "We are going to read a new book today?
The look on my students faces is priceless every time I say this, however I wish I had more non-fiction and chapter books to expose them to higher level books.
More than 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
They come to a low-income Title 1 school everyday where resources are very limited. Some of our students are unable to purchase supplies and the school is only able to do so much with the budget they have. Our students strive to do their best with what they have. Most parents hold 2-3 jobs and are unable to be there for their kids. Making library visits very rare. Some parents don't have IDs and are unable to check out books. Parents are unable to take them places and when it comes to introducing them to new topics they are unable to make connections (their background knowledge is very low). They are always eager to read new books but have not had the chance to explore many chapter books or non-fiction books due to the limited about we have in the classroom.
My Project
The students will be able to read fiction chapter books and be able to discuss it with another classmate since I ordered 2 of each chapter book. They will also be able to choose non-fiction books to learn about important people like A Picture Book of George Washington. They will have access to all of the books in the classroom library.
The books will allow my students to explore and enjoy reading new books.
The different genres and levels of books will also allow them to find books that will fit their level and help their fluency. Many students are low in fluency and constant practice in reading books they love will help with this.
